P38
P38 Inc. fills an important niche in supporting our troops in the field. There are many great charities who do important work helping our wounded troops to heal and pick up their lives, others help returning soldiers reconnect in the workplace, while still others, like the USO are on-site, taking theatre production overseas, helping keep their morale up during long months of deployment. P38’s mission is to keep up the warrior’s family morale. They provide a one on one, family to family connection between service members families and civilian families. They have all witnessed love and respect shown to troops in airports personally and on television. What they do is provide the same attention to families who bear separation at the home front.

Costco: “Gatherings of Veterans”
This group informally convenes every Friday at 11 o’clock. Cool Springs Costco. Meetings started about 15 years ago with a couple of veterans meeting for lunch at Costco on a regular basis. They would occasionally attract a few more for lunch. About 5 years ago, there were about 10 who met almost every week and now there can be 30-50 on any given Friday.  This is an informal group with no official designation, although the shirt is a good way to create a group identity. An e-mail list has over 75 names on an “A” list (those who show up on a very regular basis) and about 35 on a “B” list (those that were here once or twice, and for whatever reason are not regular attendees). There are guys who served in WWII, Korea, Vietnam and several who served between conflicts. Many served overseas, some did not.  This is an informal gathering of veterans from all branches of the services. During a meal, stories are swapped that leaves every participant with the sense that their circumstances are not unique and that they are amongst caring ‘comrades in arms’. Just turn up. By the kind courtesy of Costco

“Silver Trumpet” Cathedral Breakfasts with Presenters
This is an informal gathering of veterans from all branches of the services. Coffee and doughnuts are served. Apart from the sharing of stories that are swapped, there is a presentation by an invited speaker. The support group members realize they are not unique and that they are amongst friends who care for their physical and mental welfare. The meeting is held every third Tuesday at 7 o’clock at the Nashville Cathedral, Broadway, Nashville, TN

Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance

The veteran population accounts for nearly 30% of mesothelioma diagnoses in the United States. This is largely due to veterans being exposed to asbestos while on active duty in the military. With the latency period of mesothelioma being anywhere from 10 to 50 years, veterans are just now beginning to experience symptoms of this disease, decades after serving our country.

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that primarily affects the lining of the lungs, but can also affect the lining of the stomach and heart. Symptoms include chest pain, coughing, difficulty breathing, muscle weakness and unexplained weight loss.

For those who serve in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard, the risk of asbestos exposure is still prevalent. Past usages of asbestos continue to linger on military bases, navy ships, and other equipment. According to the 2016 census, there are roughly 20.4 million U.S. veterans who may have been exposed to this carcinogen during service.

If you or a veteran you know believes they have been exposed to asbestos while serving our country, visit www.mesothelioma.com/veterans/ to learn more about asbestos-related diseases and how you can seek compensation accordingly if diagnosed.
