Build a Kit

A basic disaster supply kit is a collection of essential items that you may need in the event of a disaster. 

Each family member should have their own kit and keep it in a designated place with easy access in case you have to leave your home quickly.

Starter Steps to Building a Kit

  1. Plan for any situation where would not have basic essentials for 3 days.
  2. Identify essential items; they are the foundation of your disaster kit.
  3. Decide how to pack.

Items to Include in Your Kit

  • Water
  • Food
  • Flashlight
  • Battery powered or hand-crank radio 
  • Extra Batteries
  • First Aid Kit
  • Sanitation and personal hygiene items (toilet paper, garbage bags and plastic ties, toothpaste and toothbrush, deodorant)
  • Cell phone charger 
  • Blankets and sleeping bags
  • Cash
  • Physical maps of the area
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Eating utensils
  • Dust mask to help filter contaminated air
  • Rain gear
  • Towels
  • Work gloves
  • Change of clothing and extra layers
  • Identification cards
  • Family and emergency contact information
  • Special prescription medications, if you have any
  • Extra eye glasses or hearing aid batteries, if you need any
  • Favorite stuffed animal, a few books, games, and things to stay busy
